lever pipe and socket tongs and so spoiled and torn off

the thread. As to the bending of 5" and 6" Pipes cold,

this is absolutely impracticable if not impossible, I

really should like to know the angle attempted.

I am

compelled to make a few remarks (however distasteful to

me) in self defence.

I say without hesitation there is not a firm

extant who can or does make a superior article in this

trade than I do.

I have never in all my life tried to deceive

any inspector or overseer sent here, either from the

Admiralty, War Office, or outside such institutions, but

on the contrary have always only been too proud to take

them into my mills and let them see the exact manner in

which the goods are manufactured.

(3) As to the insinuation that I submitted Tubes of

by your late inspector Mr. Preston.

This gentleman clearly shows you that I am a superior

manufacturer to others outside my works, nevertheless, no

matter how humiliating to myself, I am bound to say it

is absolutely untrue, I have never been guilty of such

vile conduct neither shall I ever be.

It is most difficult to reply to such

incriminations without the introduction of feeling, and I

trust I have not overstepped the boundary line of

politeness,
